Almost two thirds of adults are overweight in Glasgow (61%), slightly lower than Scotland overall (65%). The proportions of adults who are overweight was lower in Edinburgh (53%). In Scotland overall, men are more likely to be overweight than women, while in Glasgow the women are slightly more likely to be overweight.

Just over a quarter of adults are obese in Glasgow (27%). This is lower than Scotland overall, but higher than Aberdeen and Edinburgh. In Scotland more women tend to be obese than men, particularly in Glasgow where the female rate of obesity (32%) is higher than for Scotland overall (30%).

The information shown above is based on a survey sample, i.e. based on only a subset of people in each area. As with all analysis from survey data, there is a degree of uncertainty around how estimates from a subset of people accurately reflect the data from all individuals.

Adult BMI is calculated as body mass divided by the square of body height for an individual, and is universally expressed in units of kg/m². 

Overweight is defined as having a BMI of 25 or over (and includes those who are obese).

Obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or over.
