Secondary school free meal registration varies across the major Scottish Cities. In 2017, 27.5% of Glasgow secondary school pupils were registered for free school meals. Glasgow City has the highest level of free meal registration, followed by Dundee City with 23.7%. The lowest level of free meal registration is found in Aberdeen, where only 9% of children are registered. The Scottish average is 14%.


Eligibility for free school meals is often used as a proxy for poverty.  However, because of the introduction of local initiatives, eligibility for school meals differs over time and between local authorities.  A more detailed explanation is provided within notes on data section
