Click on graph to expand
Glasgow has consistently had a higher percentage of the working age population claiming out-of-work benefits than other Scottish cities and Scotland as a whole. Nevertheless, the percentage claiming out-of-work benefits in the city has declined from 29.5% in 2000 to 15% in 2019.
Notes
Data included up to 2019 will not include any economic effects due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Data before 2017 is sourced from NOMIS and includes the following groups of benefits: job seekers, ESA and incapacity benefits, lone parents and others on income related benefits. Claimants of universal credits are not included in these statistics.
Data from 2017 onwards is sourced from DWP and includes the following groups of benefits: job seekers, ESA and incapacity benefits, Universal Credit (Out-of-work) benefits, and additional claimants (i.e. estimates of those additional claimants who would have been searching for work under Universal Credit had it existed over the relevant time period). See here for additional claimant methodology, and here for more detail on Universal Credit (Out-of-work) benefit categories.
These groups have been chosen to best represent a count of all those benefit recipients who cannot be in full-time employment as part of their condition of entitlement. Those claiming solely Bereavement Benefits or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) are not included as these are not out-of-work or income based benefits.
