The above chart shows that the number of children on the Child Protection Register in all four major Scottish cities has fluctuated in the past 7 years. It decreased sharply in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 2017. While this decrease has continued in Edinburgh, the number of children on the Child Protection Register in Glasgow in 2019 has returned to a level comparable to that in 2017. Dundee has had the lowest number of children on the Child Protection Register, although it is the smallest of the four cities.

The percentage of children on the Child Protection Register in Glasgow generally increased until 2016.  Glasgow has consistently had the highest percentage of children on the Child Protection Register out of the four major Scottish cities, although both Dundee and Aberdeen have increased in the most recent period. Glasgow and Edinburgh had rates higher than the Scottish average from 2013 to 2017, after which Edinburgh has decreased to below the Scottish average.
