Deprivation
Children's population by deprivation decile, Glasgow, 2021
Nearly 52,000 children in Glasgow reside in the two most deprived deciles, nationally, while only 4,310 children live in the least deprived decile.
Proportionately, this equates to over half of Glaswegian children (52%) living in the two most deprived deciles in Scotland according to the latest Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD 2020). Only 4% of Glaswegian children live in the least deprived decile in Scotland.
This concentration of children in the more deprived areas of Glasgow reflects the fact that Glasgow's overall population is much more deprived than the Scottish population. Nevertheless, a greater proportion of children live in the most deprived areas (52%) compared to the overall population (44%).
Notes
The graph above shows the estimated population of Glasgow broken down by Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD 2020) deciles.
These deciles break down the population of Scotland into ten groups each containing approximately 10% of the population. Decile 1 represents the most deprived 10% of areas by population, decile 2 the next most deprived 10% of areas and so on, until decile 10 which represents the least deprived 10% of areas.
