This section makes the links between aspects of life in Glasgow and the lifestyle choices people are able to make.

Substance misuse and mental health

Lifestyle Resource substance

The ability to make and sustain healthy life choices is related to many factors in an individual’s life: long-term unemployment, insecure workdeprivation and social isolation are all linked to substance abuse.

Where people live

Lifestyle Resource substanceThe physical environment in which people live can encourage a physically active lifestyle. Factors such as the proximity to derelict landtraffic volumes and perceived safety (road casualties), active travel options to work or school (such as walking /cycling) can enable or inhibit the ability to lead an active lifestyle.

Childhood and adolescence

Lifestyle Resource substance

The life choices that individuals make are strongly influenced by experiences in childhood and adolescence. Problem drinking and drug taking and poor diet are more common in children and adolescents in Glasgow compared to other Scottish cities, suggesting these problems will continue to be very relevant for Glasgow.
