Problem drug use in the Glasgow City Region

Inverclyde had the highest rate of problem drug users aged 15-64 in 2015/16 (2.9%) in the Glasgow City region. Only East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire had a lower rate of problem drug-use than the Scottish average (1.6%).

These estimates for 2015/16 were the latest estimates available when this publication was produced. Some of the estimates are subject to potentially large percentage margins of error.

Drug-related deaths trend across the Glasgow City Region

Drug deaths GCR trendThe rates of drug-related deaths have increased in all the Glasgow City Region local authorities in the last two decades. The rate of drug-related deaths has been consistently higher in Glasgow from 2014 onwards. The rates of drug-related deaths in Glasgow, Inverclyde, West Dunbartonshire, and Renfrewshire have been consistently higher than the Scottish average over the last 20 years.

The rate of drug-related deaths was generally highest among 35-44 year olds compared to other age groups across Scotland and among the Glasgow City Region local authorities. In Glasgow, however, the drug-related death rate was highest among 45-54 year olds. This was the highest age-specfiic drug-death rate across all local authorities.

These data were taken from the annual drug death report published by National Records for Scotland.

Drug-related deaths are identified from death registrations and a specially-designed questionnaire completed by forensic pathologists. The forensic pathologists list the drugs and solvents identified for the deceased. For further details please refer to the above report.
