Average (mean) rental costs by accomodation size in Greater Glasgow (2010-2023)
Rents have risen in Glasgow between 2010 and 2023, and they have risen most sharply for larger homes. The average rental cost for a four-bedroom home in 2010 was £1,067. This more than doubled to £2,192 in 2023. The rental costs for a shared room rose from £313 to £544 over the same time period. For a shared room or for homes of one-to-three bedrooms, there is a clear pattern of steady increase in rental costs from 2010 to 2021, with a steeper increase between 2021 and 2023. For four-bedroom homes, the increase was less gradual throughout this period, and steepened from 2018 onwards.

Comparing the regions surrounding Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen, the largest proportional increases in rental costs between 2010 and 2023 were in Greater Glasgow for each size of home. Prices in Aberdeen and Shire rose least, with two-bedroom homes actually seeing a slight decrease in average (mean) rental costs. The largest homes have seen the biggest proportional increases across each of these regions, from a 58% increase in Aberdeen and Shire, to a 105% increase – meaning that rents in 2023 were more than double those of 2010 – in Greater Glasgow.
This chart looks at rental price increases in the regions that surround Glasgow. Again, increases were highest in Greater Glasgow. The next highest increases were seen in East Dunbartonshire, where shared one-bedroom rental costs rose by 57.7%. Renfrewshire and Inverclyde has the lowest increases for many home sizes, but for homes with four bedrooms, average rental prices increased by 71% over these 13 years.
